THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

First Reading
A reading from the prophet Joel     2:12-18

"Yet even now," says the LORD," return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; and tear your hearts and not your garments. "Return to the LORD, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy, and repents of evil. Who knows whether he will not turn and repent, and leave a blessing behind him, a cereal offering and a drink offering for the LORD, your God? Blow the trumpet in Zion; sanctify a fast; call a solemn assembly; gather the people. Sanctify the congregation; assemble the elders; gather the children, even nursing infants. Let the bridegroom leave his room, and the bride her chamber. Between the vestibule and the altar let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep and say, "Spare your people, O LORD, and make not your heritage a reproach, a byword among the nations. Why should they say among the peoples, 'Where is their God?'" Then the LORD became jealous for his land, and had pity on his people.

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

The Gradual
Be merciful unto me O God, be merciful unto me:
for my soul trusteth in thee
He shall send from heaven:
and save me from the reproof of him that would eat me up.

Second reading
A reading from the second letter of St Paul to the Corinthians.     5:20-21

So we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin * who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Working together with him, then, we entreat you not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he says, " At the acceptable time I have listened to you, and helped you on the day of salvation. "Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

The word of the Lord
Thanks be to God

The Tract
O Lord, deal not with us after our sins:
nor reward us according to our wickedness
Lord, remember not our old sins, but have mercy upon us and that soon: for we are come to great misery
Help us O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy Name, O Lord:
O deliver us and be merciful unto our sins, for thy name’s sake.

The Gospel
The Lord be with you.
And with thy spirit.
A reading from the holy + Gospel according to Matthew   6:1-6
Glory be to thee, O Lord.

 Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

“Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

"And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward.  But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

 "And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise be to thee, O Christ.

Then follows the Homily,

The Blessing of Ash

for the praise and glory of his Name,
for our good and the good
of all his holy Church.

Prayer over the Offerings,
…… Amen.

The Lord be with you.
And with thy spirit.

Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up unto the Lord.

Let us give thanks unto the Lord our God.
It is meet and right so to do

The priest prays the preface

O Saviour of the world,
who by thy Cross and precious Blood

hast redeemed us:
save us and help us,
we humbly beseech thee, O Lord.

Our Father, who art in heaven,
  hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
  thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
  Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
  as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
   but deliver us from evil.

Deliver us,
O Lord, we beseech thee,
from all evils, past, present, and to come;
and at the intercession of the blessed
and glorious ever Virgin Mary, Mother of God,
with thy blessed Apostles Peter and Paul,
and with Andrew, and all the Saints,
favourably grant peace in our days,
that by the help of thine availing mercy
we may ever both be free from sin
and safe from all distress.

For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen.

The Peace
O Lord Jesus Christ,
who saidst to thine Apostles,
Peace I leave with you;
my peace I give unto you:
Regard not our sins,
but the faith of thy Church;
and grant to her peace and unity
according to thy will;
who livest and reignest
with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
one God, world without end.
Amen.

The peace of the Lord be always with you.
And with thy spirit.

As the Priest takes the Host and breaks it, he says:
Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
Therefore let us keep the feast.

kneel

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world,
have mercy upon us.
O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world,
have mercy upon us.
O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world,
grant us thy peace.

Prayer of Humble Access
We do not presume
  to come to this thy Table,
O merciful Lord,
trusting in our own righteousness,
  but in thy manifold and great mercies.
We are not worthy so much as to
  gather up the crumbs under thy Table.
But thou art the same Lord
  whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord,
  so to eat the flesh of thy dear
Son Jesus Christ,
  and to drink his blood,
  that our sinful bodies
may be made clean by his body,
  and our souls washed
through his most precious blood,
  and that we may evermore dwell in him,
  and he in us. Amen.

Behold the Lamb of God, behold him that taketh away the sins of the world.
Blessed are those who are called to the Supper of the Lamb.

Lord, I am not worthy
that thou shouldest come under my roof,
but speak the word only,
and my soul shall be healed.

Communion Antiphon.

The Body of our Lord Jesus Christ,
which was given for thee,
preserve thy body and soul unto everlasting life.
Amen

The Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ,
which was shed for thee,
preserve thy body and soul unto everlasting life.
Amen

Holy Communion.

After Communion, silence may be kept.
 kneeling, all say the following:

Almighty and everliving God,
  we most heartily thank thee
for that thou dost feed us,
  in these holy mysteries,
with the spiritual food
  of the most precious Body and Blood
of thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ;
  and dost assure us thereby
of thy favour and goodness towards us;
  and that we are very members incorporate
in the mystical body of thy Son,
  the blessed company of all faithful people;
and are also heirs, through hope,
  of thy everlasting kingdom,
by the merits of the most precious
  death and passion of thy dear Son.
And we humbly beseech thee,
  O heavenly Father,
so to assist us with thy grace,
  that we may continue in that holy fellowship,
and do all such good works
  as thou hast prepared for us to walk in;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
  to whom, with thee and the Holy Spirit,
be all honour and glory,
  world without end. Amen.
