The New Lectionary
New Translation
The Lectionary, is the book that contains the Scripture readings for Mass and the Sacraments, and is changing as part of the continuing process of revising liturgical translations. The process began with the Roman Missal in 2011 and has continued with all the other liturgical texts. The new Lectionary will use the English Standard Version - Catholic Edition of the Bible and the Abbey Psalter. The changes are intended to make the biblical translations more faithful to the original languages, biblical scholarship, and to provide a text for use in liturgical setting
After long and scholarly discussions, it was last year the Bishops approved the translation of the bible to be used in Catholic Churches. For over fifty years we have been using the Jerusalem Translation, so what has become very familiar will sound a little different from Advent 2024.
New Books
This means we have to buy news books, which are known as the ‘Lectionary’. These books have to be of good quality, a high standard and durable as they contain the Word of God and will be used everyday at Holy Mass.

If you would like to purchase one or more these books for use in Church, please make the selection below. If you wish to have an inscription, add that in the order process 'note to seller'. The books we use at present have been in use for about fifty years, so this will be a lasting gift!
People's edition.
This new translation also means that if you have a Sunday Missal, it will now be redundant. You can still use it, as the readings will remain the same, but the translation will be slightly different. This may be thought provoking, but also confusing! At the moment the readings are re-produced on the weekly Mass sheet, however the advice from the Bishops is that the Word of God should not be be re-produced but proclaimed. So from Advent Sunday 2024, we will no longer include the scriptural text in the Mass sheet. Members of MPB are therefore encouraged to purchase their own Sunday Missal.
