New Translation
The Lectionary, is the book that contains the Scripture readings for Mass and the Sacraments, and is changing as part of the continuing process of revising liturgical translations. The process began with the Roman Missal in 2011 and has continued with all the other liturgical texts. The new Lectionary will use the English Standard Version - Catholic Edition of the Bible and the Abbey Psalter. The changes are intended to make the biblical translations more faithful to the original languages, biblical scholarship, and to provide a text for use in liturgical setting
After long and scholarly discussions, it was last year the Bishops approved the translation of the bible to be used in Catholic Churches. For over fifty years we have been using the Jerusalem Translation, so what has become very familiar will sound a little different from Advent 2024.
New Books
This means we have to buy news books, which are known as the ‘Lectionary’. These books have to be of good quality, a high standard and durable as they contain the Word of God and will be used everyday at Holy Mass.
Published soon
We will place an order with the publisher, the Catholic Truth Society, so we can receive them as soon as they are printed, in October 2024, in time to be used from the First Sunday of Advent. The publisher has offered a pre-publish discount of 15pc. But even with the discount the books needed will cost just under a thousand pounds!
Placing an order
The order needed for use in Church, will contain eight books: four ambo size lectionaries, which cover the liturgical seasons of the year; four chapel size lectionaries, which are a smaller size of the ambo edition; and a Book of the Gospels. It has been suggested that members of the parish may like to buy one or more of the books as a gift, or in memory of someone or in thanksgiving for something. Each of the books has a cover-plate to accommodate an inscription, which is on the inside front cover.
Gifting a lectionary.
If you would like to purchase one or more these books for use in Church, please make the selection below. If you wish to have an inscription, add that in the order process 'note to seller'. The books we use at present have been in use for about fifty years, so this will be a lasting gift!
People's edition.
This new translation also means that if you have a Sunday Missal, it will now be redundant. You can still use it, as the readings will remain the same, but the translation will be slightly different. This may be thought provoking, but also confusing! At the moment the readings are re-produced on the weekly Mass sheet, however the advice from the Bishops is that the Word of God should not be be re-produced but proclaimed. So from Advent Sunday 2024, we will no longer include the scriptural text in the Mass sheet. Members of MPB are therefore encouraged to purchase their own Sunday Missal. Orders can be made here
